when you need it most, it stops

...you cannot imagine how much i am missing baseball right now. i miss getting 15 red sox digests a day, aptly depicting the torture/pleasure of rooting for the team, depending upong the most recent digressions/progressions. i miss checking scores on the internet and sportscenter all the time, and league standings, and baseball tonite, and even peter gammons. i miss monday night baseball, and wednesday night baseball, and sunday night baseball, and all the nights in-between. i miss hearing a/b how awful the tigers are. i miss perfect games, and near misses, and catches at the wall. i miss steve bartman, and bob costas doing the world series so many years ago, and game dogs, and cold beers. i miss grass stains from sliding catches, and double plays, and walkoff homeruns. i miss wtp (warning track power), and popups, and groundouts, and sacrifice flies. i miss stolen bases, and pickoffs, and rundowns. i miss shallow fly balls, and tags, and bunts. i miss pedro pointing to the sky, and nomar's giant nose, and millar's springsteen impersonation. i miss cowboying up, and texas' lack of pitching, and 'it's a great day, let's play two'. i miss teddy ballgame, and the say hey kid, and sammy smiling and charging in from the outfield. i miss the brawls, and inside pitches, and pedro letting them know he means business. i miss cheering against roger clemens. i miss day games, and the 7th inning stretch, and harry carey's drunkenness, and the osbourne's 'take me out to the ballgame' rendition. i miss three times weekly dan shaughnessy articles in the boston globe, and wearing a baseball cap around and having it actually mean something. i miss it all, the crack of the bat, the length of johnny's hair, even the whining of pedro and manny, but as was once so appropriately stated:

it breaks your heart. it is designed to break your heart. the game begins in the spring when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone. you count on it. rely on it to buffer the passage of time to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive, and then just when the days are all brilliant, when you need it most, it stops. bart giamatti

there's no better way to say it - baseball is definitely america's pasttime. take your nfl, nba, nhl. i'll gladly give up all three forever, just for one day to see the two worst teams in mlb play one another to a 0-0 tie in the ninth or a 10-2 route or anything for that matter. yeah we're lucky to have ou football right now b/c if not for that i would be entering a period darkness shrinks label SAD and i kindly credit the lack of MLB.
