they had an aura of mystique, and we gloated in it, almost as if it were our own. b/c in this day and age of television and radio and internet, we felt it truly was ours. our record, our boys trying for the record to end all records. what could we do but cheer? personal prejudices aside, everyone was for mcgwire or sosa one. how were we to anticipate the evil aftermath to follow? how were we to know that the record to end all records would be overshadowed by the glare of steroid use? is mcgwire really that naive, that tongue-tied? is sosa really that illspoken, that illiterate? how will we ever know the truth behind the steroids issue? how will we ever know if the record was truly broken or if the record is aided? should it be double-astriked, one for beating ruth in 162, and one for steroids?
